Hello, my name is Ruthann Hertel and I am so excited to join the Ascent team and be a part of the brand new campus! This will be my fourth year teaching and my third year teaching 4th grade and I just LOVE it! (4th grade is the best!) I graduated from the University of Utah in the College of Education for Elementary Education in 2015. I love to read! I also love to camp and spend time with my family. I also enjoy spending time with my animals, I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 fish, 6 chickens, 1 duck, 2 bunnies.
I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah but have moved several times, once all the way to California. I have been married going on 18 years and we have a 10 year old son, who I love more than I could have ever imagined. He has made me a better person and a better teacher. I am a teacher mom and I understand completely how it is to have a 4th grader at home. He helped me understand what it is really like to be a fourth grader and I understand the students I teach much more personally. This year he will be in 5th grade, here at Ascent.
My love of Learning:
My love of learning started when I was very young. I was always learning and striving to discover more. When I was in 8th grade, I had an Earth Science teacher who spiked my curiosity for science and from that moment on I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to be the one that introduced the power of knowledge to a child. I wanted to nurture a child’s willingness to learn, to watch the ideas bloom into full blown accomplishments. I want to see a child’s face when they discover a new idea or way of thinking. I want to know that I made a difference in their life.
My professional education philosophy:
My professional education philosophy matches that of Ascent in that every student is an individual with their own struggles and dreams and it is my job as a teacher to foster their learning and bring those dreams to life, and allow them to express their understanding in a way that best suits them. I just love that I have found a network of schools that match my teaching style so perfectly!
I will have high expectations of each student and will be there every step of the way to help them achieve those expectations. I want my students to fall in love with learning and to learn, really learn not just to memorize information. I will teach the required curriculum in a creative and innovative way as I foster their love of learning through problem solving, experience, observation, experimentation and critical thinking. I want my classroom to be a safe and welcoming place, where parents are partners in the children’s learning. I am always learning and I want to teach your students how to love to learn!
