My name is Laura Pirkle and I feel very privileged to have joined the team at Ascent Academy West Valley City February, 2019!
My background is primarily in Psychology, and Education, and I have been working in Special Education for the past 10 years, having found my greatest passion helping neuro-diverse youth achieve their fullest potential, so they can thrive in school and far beyond. During this time, I have worked with a wide range of students and within different communities and cultures. I believe that every students’ individual learning style, capacity, and the way in which they connect to the world must be understood, and thereafter, there is truly no ceiling to their growth!
I obtained a B.S. from CSUEB in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, also having spent 3 years during my undergraduate career at the University of Oregon participating in child development research. I then studied at Hawaii Pacific University, earning a Masters in Global Leadership & Sustainable Development, and a graduate certificate in Consulting. I worked in the public schools in Hawaii, and participated in a registered behavior technician education program, and worked at more than 10 schools around the Island of Oahu, teaching me so much about special education, education as a whole, and instructional methods. I then obtained my teaching endorsement through Weber State University.
The classroom remains where I feel the most challenged, inspired, and my students never cease to amaze me with their growth and how much I learn from them every year! I remember every student I have worked with, and feel so grateful to have been a part of their education!
In my spare time I enjoy baking, hiking and outdoor activities, crafts, gardening, painting, reading, and spending time with my two wonderful sons ages 6 and 10.
